Hi all. Hope I'm not typing into the void here. I'm Rachel, just moved to Quincy in August. Finally somewhat settled. I'm in desperate need of knowing where all the awesome bookstores are around here! I moved here from western MA where I visited every used bookstore in a 75 mile radius of me at least once a month. (Shh, if it's books it can't be called hoarding.) Looking forward to trawling this group's forums and getting to know my fellow South Shore readers.

Welcome, Rachel! there are definitely more bookstore options in Boston itself but there are a few around the South Shore as well.

Not quite the South Shore, but not too too far from Quincy is New England Mobile Book Fair in Newton.http://www.nebookfair.com/ They have a lot of new and remainder books. Its a really great place to just browse the shelves.

This group initially started online here at goodreads. If I recall correctly, I reached out to a few local folks on goodreads and invited them to the group. A few of us decided to meet in real life once a month to have in person reading discussions. I've been in a few book clubs over the years.

My general tips are:
- have a set reoccurring day for in person discussions or live chats. For example we do the last Sunday of every month at 1 PM. This takes a lot of the hassle away of everyone piping in with what day works for them (and potentially getting hurt feelings if the group ends up picking a day that doesn't work for someone).
- determine if there are any guidelines for which books you pick. Several of the groups I was in had a "must be available in paperback" rule and some had page limits (like book should be less than 400 pages long).
- it is often helpful to pick books that have reading guides available. these are often useful to pick out a few questions to pose to the group. There are many sites on the web that have compiled a number of guides. www.readinggroupguides.com is one.
- For an initial book, it might be good to either just have the leader pick one or have a list of 3 or 4 ready for people to chose from.
- Decide how you are going to pick your books. I've been in groups that do it a few different ways. In one club, we all took turns bringing lists of 3-4 books and people would vote at the meeting to pick the next book. While at others, anyone can suggest a book and people determine through discussion what the next pick(s) will be.

Hi Nicole, Kimberly is correct. We typically don't have a December pick because it was always a challenge finding a time to meet with the holidays. Instead, we pick a longer book to read across December and January and meet to discuss it the last Sunday in January. This year's long winter pick is The Count of Monte Cristo

I am an author named Dave Mercaldo and I have a middle grade book releasing 6/2/26 titled A Weekend with Gramps '97. It is full with 90s nostalgia and humor. It is also has real family photos and fun illustrations as it centers around my real grandpa!

This book is already received 5 star rating from Reader's Favorite and an A rating from Book Life. I have also been booked for a few book store signings in Massachusetts this summer. One of the book stores I am booked to visit on August 1st is Buttonwood Books on the South Shore. I would love connect with this group!

(I am also currently reading Project Hail Mary, trying to finish it while it's still in theaters!)
