Welcome, I have a similar background of traveling to Japan for work and writing a novel set in Japan (only mine is Heian Period - 10th-11th c.)

Joydeep Acharya Thanks Gerald and Kate. And all the best to you Kate. Will look forward to your novel. Heian period is such an exciting period to write about. I read the Tale of Genji and have the Pillow Book in by to-read list. Gerald wrote: "Welcome, welcome. Hope you enjoy yourself with the group:)"

Kevin Reynolds Hi everyone. Just a quick note about the big earthquake that happened yesterday at 16:10 local time. It was on the Sea of Japan coastal area, Shindo 7 on the Japan scale, as big as the 2011 quake on the Pacific side. We felt some shaking here in Tokyo, but very minor compared to the events in the Kanazawa, Toyama, Niigata areas. Tsunami of up to 5m hit the coast (2011 waves were twice as big), some buildings collapsed, some burnt, but overall casualties are thankfully far fewer than 2011.

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant is on the coast, but currently not operating (I believe). Ironically, that power station is the basis for one I described in my Mamoribito novel, hence my additional interest in the events of yesterday.

Ongoing aftershocks are still hitting the area, so are Tsunami as the waves reflect back off the Korea/ Russia coastlines. The emergency evacuation warnings are still in place, and the rescue services are now searching for those trapped. If anything further happens I'll let you know, but I expect you are all already following events in the news as it is.
Kevin

Glad to hear you are safe!

Kevin Reynolds Thanks Gerald! Still more aftershocks happening as I type (Wed 3rd, 07:00 in Japan). Plus an aircraft accident at Haneda airport in Tokyo, where thanks to the cabin crew a major tragedy was averted - although 5 people in the coast guard aircraft lost their lives (they were on their way to the earthquake disaster area).

Jennifer Hi! My name is Jen, big fan of anime, manga and light novels.
My favourite light novel is I Swear I Won't Bother You Again! by Reina Soratani and illustrated by Haru Harukawa.
Another favourite light novel and manga of mine is the Apothecary Diaries which recently got an anime on Crunchyroll that is also very good and pretty faithful to its source material.
My fabourite light novels/manga/anime are typically about modern women being reincarnated as villainesses or the original villainess getting a second chance at redemption, much like I Swear I Won't Bother You Again is. My Next Life as a Villainess is a very fun read and watch of the anime
One book series I am dying to read but unfortunately cannot is Onmyoji by Baku Yumemakura. I've been very interested in reading the books since discovering and binge watching the anime on Netflix since I am very interested in the Heian period along with the supernatural, especially tales of Yokai. I can't read Japanese though so sadly can't read the books or another favourite light novel in Japan which has a manga and anime dubbed in English thankfully which actually got me into manga/anime/light novels in the first place called Kakuriyo Bed and Breakfast for Spirits.

Welcome! Nice Choices you have here.^,^ If you looking for recommendations, for reincarnated strong woman, I'd suggest Ascendance of a Bookworm, Dahlia in Bloom and Weakest Tamer begins her Trash Picking Journey. For villains stuff, I like The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen, Teamoon Empire and 7th Time Loop (which i haven't read yet but am going too after having just watched 1 ep of the anime) all seem good ones:) The Raven of the Inner Court is another good period piece Id highly recommend.

Roger Thanks for having me! My name is Roger and I am a big fan of anime, light novels, and manga as well. As far as light novels go, I will read just about anything! I recently finished the Bakemonogatari trilogy and I'm looking to finish the Monogatari series - eventually. There's a lot! I am a huge fan of the Fate series. I've read the FSN VN, Fate Hollow Ataraxia VN, and I've watched basically every anime adaptation that has been released of Fate thus far. I do like Konosuba as well. It has to be up there with one of my favorite series of all time and I need to read the light novels! Lately, I've been trying to get into series that I am not entirely familiar with and explore new things. I expect I'll be in a lot of the recommendations channels frequently.

I've heard of the first two. Actually, I've read volume 1 of Apothecary Diaries. Ascendance of a Bookworm is good though I haven't read the LN. The last one is intriguing though. I've never heard of it. I may dive into that one.

Cassandra Hi, there! I am a Japan enthusiast and fan of J-Rock. I have recently gotten into Japanese books. Both novels and light novels from Japan. I just finished not too long ago my first Japanese book in the raw Japanese and began and finished another with an official English translation called Idol, Burning by Rin Usami. It's so exciting reading Japanese books! You can check out my latest Japanese book review here on my blog if you'd like: https://thehugeanifan.wordpress.com/2...

I mostly read Asian fictions and LNs, with the most recent one being SAO (have followed the series in the past, but wanted to pick up the LN again). Nice to meet you all and looking forward to discover great recommendations in the future!

Natascha Czechanowski Hello everyone, thank you for having me. I recently joined and read mainly light novels, manga and diverse literature, whatever catches my interest. I'm a writer myself and have recently translated my book into English, changing it to a light novel format in the process and am currently writing the second part. Nice to meet you all.

Alexander Hello everyone, I'm Alexander and I have been reading light novels for roughly 8 years now. I originally got hooked reading Hyouka (I know technically not a light novel) and kept reading light novels based on suggestions from friends. Hyouka is still one of my favorite novels although I also enjoyed SAO, Danmachi, Sakurasou, Oregairu, Amagi and many more. よろしく.

Jack Welcome aboard Alexander. It’s great to have another LN reader in the group.

message 572: by Miss X (new)

Miss X hello everyone, i'm Xinshi, nice to meet you all! I've been reading light novels for a few years now but I also love k-dramas, manga's and a bit of anime. I just recently came across this app and I find this to be a very convenient app.

my favourite kind of LN are emotional, sad and romance, slice of life and with a hint of supernatural. a few of my favorite books are: I want to eat your pancreas (first read), three days of happiness and wait for me yesterday in spring. my favourite authors are: yoru sumoni, mei hachimoku and makoto shinkai.

I look forward to be reading a lot again and enjoy the reccommendations in this group!

message 573: by Mei (new)

Mei Kurakake Hello

I'm Mei and I like reading Keigo Higashino, Kanae Minato and Yusuke Kishi, Miyuki Miyabe and Jun Ikeido (I know, the basic ones).

Besides them, I've recently discovered Riu Kushiki and she's quickly rising to my favorite authors.

I tend to find books to read by learning about them being adapted into dramas/movies, though recently I've been learning about books through an instagram account.

Currently reading Fake Documentary Q (novelization of a popular youtube channel), though I'm almost done with it.

message 574: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Cheung Hey everyone! I’m Carrie, an original English Light Novel Author and avid reader of Light Novels. I also have a digital monthly magazine spotlighting oeln author and artists.

The first light novel I read was Sword Art Online and I fell in love with it immediately. I love reading pretty much any genre.

I look forward to connecting with all of you! 😊

message 575: by Mars (new)

Mars I would have devoured this group in my early Japanophile heydays of the 2010’s. I’m Mars, and I live in Japan. I still enjoy niche Japanese subculture and am particularly fond of showa-era literature, especially Mishima, but after living in here for 4+ years, I’ve discovered a love of western philosophy and eastern metaphysical topics. Still very interested in light novels and animanga but other hobbies call to me more frequently.
I’ve published a book before and that was rated 1-star on Amazon (yeowch!)
宜しくお願いします。

Remington Frost I'm such a huge fan of Japanese Light Novels that I incorporate a lot of their tropes in my books.

Thanks for having this kind of group.

message 577: by Esther (new)

Esther Kompis Hello everyone!

I'm Esther from Hungary. I started reading light-novels in the early 2000s, but I didn't know what I'm reading that time. My very first LN was Ai no Kusabi in English which I found on a Russian website.
After that I didn't really read LNs, because they weren't known in my country. I found them way later, in 2018, when I read Full Metal Panic, Violet Evergarden and Kyou Kara Maou. But I just started to buy them two years ago. Now I'm buying 86 - Eighty-Six and My Happy Marriage Volumes which I really enjoy. So technically I'm still new, but I try to read and buy more and more light-novels. I enjoy them, and I read every kinds which are enjoyable for me.

message 578: by Penny (new)

Penny Hi everyone!
My name is Penny and I have been reading light novels for about 6 years now. My first light novel was Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter (which I still love to this day!). I love both manga and light novels, such as Spy X Family, Blue Lock, and Apothecary Diaries (my favorite!), as well as many many more. I pretty much love all genres, and I am trying to learn Japanese to be able to read non-translated stories, although it has been a rough journey. I am really glad to be a part of this club and happy reading!

message 579: by nur_light (new)

nur_light Nice to meet everyone!

My name is Nur, and I would say I’m a newcomer to light novels. I recently discovered it back in 2022 where I read my first LN, “My Happy Marriage,” which I borrowed from a friend. I was more of an anime lover at the time, but seeing the gorgeous cover of “my happy marriage” just made me fell in love and I did a bit of research on this (yes I did judged the book by its cover).
I haven’t read too many LN, but maybe just a handful. I love to read historical romances and fantasy, but I am also open to all genres. My favorite so far would probably be “Hello, I am a Witch and my Crush Wants me To Make a Love Potion” and “Your Name” (fell in love with the movie and wanted to read the novel). I hope to enjoy reading and discovering more LN in here <33
