I wanted to write a paranormal romance that wasn't vampires or shapeshifters (I just written some vamps), and I was also interested in cursed heroes and the Beauty and the Beast tale (one of my favourite fairy tales). Roman Britain is also a fascinating period of history so I had all these things rolling around and I just needed a creature. Goblins were a feeding the baby at 2am idea. At the time I had a set of tarot cards that dipped into the darker side of fairy lore (another interest of mine that I explore in the Court of Annwyn series) so I don't think my subconscious had far to dig :). So the Shadowlands came from all tiny bits of ideas, but once goblins had popped up I knew that was what I'd been looking for to make the stories work. 3 different men, who experienced the curse (and the Roman takeover) very differently.(less)
