I felt the same about the book and about the book as compared to the movie.
Aurora truly was more likable in the movie, very much because of Maclaine. She could be loathed and liked at the same time, which was different in the book. I was surprised her daughter's plight was so short too, but liked much of the book.
The casting for the movie was perfect Ron. Jack Nicholson as her astronaut lover was an improvement over the General.
Oh I’m so disappointed to read this review! And so sorry this didn’t work for you. Hope the next book is much better.
I'm sorry this wasn't a good one for you. I read it years ago (when I lived in Houston) and was entertained. I agree - the movie is better.
Diane, even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading Aurora’s story, I do understand how she could be a bit much to take.
Diane, I am so interested in your review! This book is on my list for this year.
Unlike you, I didn't love the movie -- so I am prepared to "not love" the book, haha! I am interested to see how my expectations (the opposite of yours) will affect my opinion of the book. This should be interesting ;)
I am almost grateful to see your review, Diane. I hated Aurora. I hated her so much that I refused to finish the book. I couldn't take that many more pages of her to get to the good 20 you describe. I have often thought that I ought to try again...after all 90% of my favorite GR friends and reviewers give this a full 5-stars and accolades to go with them.
I liked the movie, but even it wasn't an absolute favorite, but lordie it was better than the book! Hard to believe, because I love McMurtry. I get absolutely lonesome for Lonesome Dove and have to read it repeatedly.
Sara, I had a visceral reaction to Aurora, but could understand Emma's hopelessness after being raised by such a woman. Had it not been for the character of Rosie the maid, I could not have finished it. We can form a club. I get lonesome for Lonesome Dove as well.
You can’t win them all. I remember really enjoying this one but I can understand your reaction to Aurora.
