Fantastic review. This book demands a great deal of thought paid to it before it becomes enjoyable, and you've captured the particular aspects of that effort and its resulting rewards perfectly.
Drew, this is one of the best reviews I have read on GR, and on a book that is very difficult to review. Really well done.
Wow, thanks! It always feels like I have no control over my writing after I read a good book; when I read a bad one I can excoriate it like nobody's business, but after a good one, I can barely remember how to use punctuation correctly.
If Aubrey and Kris both say this was great, who am I to disagree? Seriously, Drew, this was outstanding! I've only read a few of her short stories, but could recognize the praises you heaped on this one in them.
Yes, this is great, Steve. But as far as "Golden" books, Algren's The Man with the Golden Arm has popped up a couple times in my feed recently, and I'd consider that and this both required reading, with TMwtGA being grittier and TGN being airier (though by no means insubstantial!). But I might recommend the Algren for you first, if only because of the hometown-hero thing.
Good tip, Drew. The page count of TGN makes me think it'll be a big investment. TMwtGA is likely the better risk.

YES. It's fantastic.
Thanks! It didn't feel very cogent when I was writing it, but I'm glad I did, because every time I come back and read it again it reminds me of just how good the book was.
