Lisa de Nikolits is the author of thirteen traditionally published novels.

13. THAT TIME I KILLED YOU
Janis Wheeler lives in a picturesque coastal town where nothing ever seems to happen—a husband, two teenage children, a life that looks ordinary from the outside, if you don’t look too closely.

Until the last day of school, when a police car pulls up outside her house.

Sixteen years ago, Janis killed her abusive lover by burning down a motel with him inside it. She told herself it was the only way out. She told herself she had escaped what happened. For a long time, she almost believed it.

But now someone is asking questions.

And Janis realizes she may never have been as safe as she believed.

If I don't have a big idea to work on, then I write sentences, fragments (observations/poems) that I may or may not use later. My motto is 'write one thing a day' and I do - sometimes that thing is thousands of words, other times it's only a sentence. 'Just one thing a day' is how I do it, and I don't look beyond that or stress because I haven't written more. After all, novels are made up of one sentence after another! (less)

And when a story starts to really gel and come together, it's one of the best feelings in the world! And when people like (or even hate) your characters, they are relating to them in a real way, as if they were real people, and it doesn't get better than that! I love entertaining people too. I know, for me, that escaping into a good book is one of life's greatest pleasures and that I can offer that to a reader, is such an incredible gift. I know how much books mean to me, so to be part of the crowd who helps create them, well, I feel truly blessed.(less)

Joseph Brodsky
“When hit by boredom, let yourself be crushed by it; submerge, hit bottom. In general, with things unpleasant, the rule is: The sooner you hit bottom, the faster you surface. The idea here is to exact a full look at the worst. The reason boredom deserves such scrutiny is that it represents pure, undiluted time in all its repetitive, redundant, monotonous splendor.

Boredom is your window on the properties of time that one tends to ignore to the likely peril of one's mental equilibrium. It is your window on time's infinity. Once this window opens, don't try to shut it; on the contrary, throw it wide open.”
