Madelyn very delayed but I think you're 100% right on this. the ending made me LOVE the book because it was that final ominous punch to the gut. I'm surprised at how both people who like and people who hate the ending don't seem to see all the signs...

Sarah Wiles This has really got me thinking and I am not sure everything adds up. Remarque first is part of the crew of the Cancer, which launches in 1984. During this mission she fixes the Cancer's o-ring seals, leading her to be chosen as the commander of the Libra vessel. So wouldn't they have had the solution to fixing O-rings (the failure of which led to the Challenger disaster) once she came back from her first trip? So even in the IFT where the Libra (launched in 1985) found the other planet resulting in the Terminus, the technology would still have been there to fix the o-rings = no Challenger explosion. Maybe I am reading too much into it- I guess it never really is explained how Courtney manages to survive her attack in the terra firma after the Libra self-destructed. Why would the author have chosen the exact date of the Challenger explosion for the epilogue if he wasn't trying to make some point though? The terra firma after the Cancer return should have had no Challenger disaster, regardless of what happened to the Libra mission. Guess this just proves your point- terra firma was actually an IFT?
