message 1: by Laura (new)

Laura I thought it was his wife, too. He obviously loved Kya even though he was a coward and an asshole and a rapist. He treasured the book she made him and he wore the necklace every day. What wife would brook that?

message 2: by Vihinton (new)

Vihinton I thought the wife too since she would have a motive...a cheating husband.

message 3: by Staci (new)

Staci I suspected the wife at one point. even Jumpin for a second but I knew neither Jumpin nor Tate would ever let her be on trial for a murder they comitted. Kya was both human and nature personality traits. She did not see her actions as criminal but just carrying out nature laws. His death was not exactly violent. It almost looked like an accident. Though we know it was not.

Eula Kozma Yes, why was there no talk of the wife?!

message 5: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Graziano I don't know that I would see it as it came out of nowhere. She grew up with a violent father and her mother left as a result. She knew from that that Chase would not stop his violent actions toward her.

message 6: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Murphy I thought it was Chase's Mom. Her testimony at the trial seemed peppered with motive as she did not want him anywhere near the Marsh Girl

message 7: by Joy (new)

Joy I thought it might have been Tate! I thought maybe Jumpin' told Tate...but how could he sit in that court room and not admit it, so that theory was wrong.

message 8: by Julie (new)

Julie Suzanne I think we saw her ability to be violent when she defended herself against Chase in the assault.

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Makes sense. (Julie.) I had also thought it could have been Chase's wife. I do like the ending. Only found it a bit anti-climactic, never getting to read the full story of how it played out.

message 10: by Glenda (new)

Glenda Kya was a naturalist. As she writes in her poem, the female firefly would signal the male and end up killing him. That's just what Kya did.

message 11: by Helen (new)

Helen Zell I'm late to the party, but I felt we observed Kya grow into independent and at times fierce individual. We saw how she yelled profanities at Tate when he finally came back. We saw how she fought off Chase when he tried to rape her. We saw how mad her inner monologue could get sometimes. I think its seems plausible that she could grow self-assured and also threatened enough that she could execute a pre-meditated murder. She was very meticulous and good at self-preservation at such a young age that it doesn't surprise me that she was able to plan out a pre-meditated murder.

message 12: by Rick (new)

Rick Presley It would have been a far more satisfying ending if it had been the wife and she was trying to frame Kya. She could have tricked him by offering a liaison at the fire tower under the guise of another woman and then confronting him. The killing could have been accidental or a crime of passion with her reaching out for the shell as he was falling.

Amy Ingalls I agree. We never saw and evidence that she was capable of such an elaborate scheme. And to travel back and forth on a but, around so many people, and maintain her cool is really hard to believe.
