Andi Character study -- that's exactly how I would describe it. If you think of it strictly as a mystery (which many people will, considering it's Tana French), I can see how it falls short for some. But for me, it was fascinating to watch Toby move through the story and to wonder how and whether he might grow from there on.

Liz Well put! to both above comments). I thought the end was a shocking & satisfying response to Toby's need to conquer his sense of powerlessness and rip away the entitlement & oblivion that made him shallow. The mystery plot element seemed secondary to Toby's growing self-awareness.
