I have to go back and read the story at a slower pace and look for details I missed. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Interesting... One of the things I was struck by is that some of the characters seem one way when it is their chapter talking, and seem an entirely different way when another is talking. Which is true of people in real life of course. Octavius is the most noteworthy example of this. His story makes clear he's masking deep pain. But then in the later chapters he takes that pain out on others. Suicide pact is interesting. hmmm....
