Erin I agree 100%. I didn't expect that sort of ending for this book. I thought the story was good and funny up until that point and very hopeful. But that ending made her seem so much worse than I had thought.

Andrea My sentiments exactly.

Lo I think that was sort of the point, that people who you'd regard as "pretty insane" are far more relatable than you'd guess and can present as far more normal than they really are. That's a big part of why trauma is so hard to diagnose and treat -- living in society trains us, over and over, to hide our pain and try to seem like everyone else.

For what it's worth, it's simply not true that someone with very severe problems cannot recover. Abused children who are *far* worse off than Eleanor can and do recover... I've read lots of case studies. If you want to learn more about this (admittedly depressing topic), I highly recommend "The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog" for a really compassionate, enlightening look at treating children who've been through truly awful stuff.

Kat I disagree, I see no reason to lose faith in her recovery. I think at the end when she said goodbye to her mom, she knew that it wasn't real, and the newspaper article simply confirmed that. Her saying goodbye was a step in the direction of recovery, accepting what happened and ridding herself of that demon in her life. Regardless, there is always hope for recovery and for help in someone's life.
