Nancy West This is a very good analysis, Michael, and after reading it, I went back and listened to the letter (I'm on audiobook) once again. There I noticed yet another clue: the father ends the letter with something like "Maybe you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about." So he's pretty much admitting there that there's a subtext to what he's saying. Because if your father wrote you a letter saying "The land next door to your childhood home was sold and someone is building a new house there," I don't think he would have to qualify it with "but maybe you have no idea what I mean by this."
