Alex O'Brien I agree, David, I love McCarthy's writing and was spellbound by 'The Road.'

Dave Schaafsma Well, there's a darkness in McCarthy that makes me think of J.M. Coetzee, Waiting for the Barbarians, and whose Master of St Petersburg may lead you to Dostoevsky. W.G. Sebald is another guy you might try. But I am following the trail here of similarly great writers who reach into the darkness.


Captain Curmudgeon Have you read László Krasznahorkai or any of the Hungarians?
