Interesting...I haven't heard that before, not reading novels while writing one, but it makes sense. As I was writing my novel I read The Da Vinci Code and suddenly the kids had to solve some puzzles. I watched the movie "Hugo" and now there was lots of fog, steam, and mist in my book, etc. But that's not what you're talking about. You mean it hinders an author finding his own "voice" or style... Voice is a confusing term. Most author's/critics think of voice as the author's voice, or more specifically, the narrator's voice. Whereas most readers think of voice as the characters voice. How do you define "voice" and do you consider it of ultimate importance in a novel?
