Exactly, I was confused, but as I read I realized that was really an important point in why he wrote it that way (spoiler) because as I realized what had happened to the characters I suddenly understood that I, too, had been suddenly thrust into an entirely different universe--while I thought I was still in mine. If you know what I mean.
Totally understood what he was writing about and still did not care for the book at all. I do think that it would be much easier to skip over the annotations if reading rather than listening, but I won't invest the time.
