Exactly the same issues with English versions - the older one I read made Anne sound like a middle-aged woman. The one I'm reading now is much more complete and feels much more authentic.

Thanks for that information! Just checked the edition I'm about to read and thankfully it is the newer translation by Mirjam Pressler :)
