I must tell you that my mother spent every summer of her childhood on the Oregon coast without once daring to try eating a salal berry. She was shocked to catch me eating them right off the bush. I made jam just the other day! And that is not to mention the wild strawberries, Oregon grape, red and black huckleberries, dewberries (wild native blackberries), salmonberries, and thimble berries! How di I know that only the deadly nightshade were poisonous? I don't even remember. So the fear of wild foods made perfect sense to me, even though it was foolish.
