Elyse I agree completely. He enjoyed some redemption when he saved Marie Laure and resisted the pull of the Sea of Fire, but what kind of a life would he have lived after? I don't think the book was ever leading up to a romantic tryst between those too, but rather through there meeting, a recognition of the capacity for inner light in all people.

Katelyn I also read it as a suicide-type decision. Especially with the recollection of his father's death, Volkheimer's voice trailing in his head of "what you could be" and the thought that he wasn't really sure he made a working boat for Jutta. Seems to me that in this moment Werner was dwelling on what he yearned for in life that he knew could never be.
