I agree that it's not a simple prequel which can be skipped. I can't imagine enjoying Dust without it. However, Shift is a little less fun. The prequel with backstory is interesting but I didn't much care for Solo. But switching between those two plotlines in different times and with different scopes created a sense of time dilation in me which was probably the goal and in that perspective it was a success.
