Why give a name like "Mary Hope Oxford"? For the last 30 minutes I was wondering if that was the former/late maid's real identity. (Mary who was pushed off the house)
Personally, I wouldn't have used Oxford as any character name but the ending seems to have confused a lot of readers. My answer above was my interpretation of the ending but I could be wrong, there are a lot of theories around that obit. Definitely could've been written in a clearer way.
