I thought the same thing about it being Flagg or the Man in Black. It was clever of King because it could also be madness or death as Flagg represents/brings all those things. In any case I don't think Garrity won the race in the sense of getting his life back to normal or enjoying some monetary prize. He would probably be chasing the dark figure the rest of his life however long or short that may be. I really loved this book - long time King fan since I was in the fifth grade and this was an awesome treat!!
