You've read Lord of Flies with your 6 years old kid? Ok..what's wrong with you, people???
Obviously you don't have a six year old. They are very intelligent and have an understanding of the world. You don't think children can understand the concept of death when it's all around them in the news, media, games, and life. Since my daughter has been born we've lost five close family members. Discussing the virtue of non-violence, morals and social ethics is not a bad thing. Lord of the Flies reflects upon massive moral code; the right things to do and the wrong things to do or behave. Maybe more people should discuss how to rightfully treat people under stressful situations and then we wouldn't have all these sinful acts around us. Harry Potter has been read by countless youth and in it contains much abuse, death, neglect. Literature is meant to provoke discussion. I have no regrets. And to note, my daughter had suffered zero nightmares. It's a fictional story. If you must know we also read fansical My Little Pony novels!! We have read ALOT!!! :)
No, I don't have children, I'm 16. Of course they can me inteligent, but Lord of Flies is a story about politics and society, some aspects that a kid at the age of 6 is not interested in and won't understand (let's be realistic for a moment, shall we? What kid is interested in politics?). It's not about life a death, if I remeber corectly, only two charaters died in Lord of Flies: Piggy and Simion. But I wonder about you. You're a grown up woman and you didn't choutch the idea of Lord of Flies? It's about forming a totaly new society that goes wrong, a mirror of what's happening with our world in reality. If you didn't understand that, you should put yourself a question mark. You can't compare Harry Potter, a story written for children with Lord of Flies. There are some storyes that shouldn't be read at a young age, because it's useless. It'l like reading them Animal Farm by Orwell. The only think they will see it's a farm with animals. There are other thinks a kid will understand fully and love more, like Wardstone Chronicles, for example, if you want a kind-of-a Horror Story, or Charlotte's Web, it's nice too. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or James and the gigant peach. Focus on other kind of books, because reading Lord of Flies it's just pointless. Trust me, I read it at 13, and then, at 15 and I saw the difference of how I perceive it. I don't know at what age you first read Lord of Flies. There are unwritten rules about books. Don't break them.
I do truly enjoy your enthusiastic reply. You even said yourself about re-reading novels and getting different view points throughout your very young life experiences. We actually have read James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Thank-you for suggesting Charlotte's Web.
What I find fascinating is you assume I haven't read the same curriculum as you. What!?!? Animal Farm is based on Russian Revolution politics?? Karl Marx, Communism?? How profound!!
As stated before; I do sit studiously and read with her. She has questions, I answer them. I go as in depth as I feel necessary. Choose as you will with your own children one day; reading Green Eggs and Ham repeatedly to them if you wish. It's of no concern of mine, as this should be no concern of yours. Salutations.
I will not read Green Eggs and Ham repeatedly, but there are HUNDREDS of storyes wrote for Children, and there are storyes who must remain for adults. It doesn't necesarry have to have sex in it for being for Adults. It's about understand, and if you don't get this point, it's not my fault at all. And I hope you joke about not knowhing that Animal Farm is politc fable.
It's not my concern about what you're reading to you children, but I'm free to have an opinion and consider it as stange as I want, since you post it on the internet.
