All long murder mystery series eventually get predictable. Even the Michael Jecks series set in 14th century Devonshire, Englad, got predictable in that Sir Baldwin Furnshill and his friend Bailiff Simon Puttock always solved the crime...he tried to do so in an unpredictable way such as sending the two of them off on a religious pilgrimage so Spain for one book....to the shrine of St. James of Compostela (in Spanish, Santiago de Comostela).

What I'm trying to say is look for the unexpected within the expected.

I agree. This is one of my go to series when I need something lighter to read. They're fun to read and I like the characters.
