I don’t think it has to be one or the other. Could be either, or both…
I agree with Mike. The conversation about the moral points was equally of interest.
I think the complaint that most people are voicing is more that it tried to be both but was really only about the moral points because the "whodunit" portion was so obvious.
I think this particular plot point was very obvious but I didn't figure out the full stolen "plot" right away for example.
My one thought is that the ending didn't have a lot of subtlety. After a very well paced story, the way everything wrapped up felt a bit jarring, but over all I did enjoy it.
