Susan Random Thank you, that makes much more sense now.

Mary-ann Roberts Yes, I agree with Marina JW. Lexi lied because she believed the others did not deserve the money. However, who was she to judge?

She gave some money to Toma as compensation. Also, maybe because she felt guilty about being seen to be sharing the money with Patrick when it would be revealed that he was responsible for the death of Tomas’ family.

She tried to bribe Fred to leave his wife to punish her for having an affair with her husband. Funny that although she knew about Jake’s infidelity, she didn’t think of punishing him?

She showed a very warped sense of justice.

Her friends may have done other bad things, but about the syndicate, they told the truth. The ones who did lie and scheme were Lexi and Jake. Their characters were very convincing, which made the twist at the end ever more so classic.

It was a gripping read. And the novel also provided some very interesting observations on how money affects people’s attitude and what really matters in life.

Donna Hoy What a shocker at the end. Given Lexi and her morality ( can believe it of Jake), I can't believe that she would lie. Have only just finished the book, so still in shock!

Mishan Klotz Marina- I think your perspective about why Lexi would have lied about her friends withdrawing from the lottery syndicate- even though that didn't seem to fit with her overall character and ethics- is spot on.

Its pretty straightforward once you laid it all out why she wouldn't have given Patrick or Jennifer their shares. And she was offering Fred his if he left Jennifer. You speculated that Lexi would have maybe given Carla her share if Meghan hadn't beaten up Emily in the bathroom and now, thinking about that and looking back at the narrative, that is exactly right.

Remember when in the story Lexi calls Carla on the phone after the Meghan-beating-up-Emily incident? She calls and rubs in Carla's face that she had been planning to give Carla her share- 3 million- but now she wont get a penny of it and she can thank her daughter. That chapter only becomes illuminated and makes sense once you read the last chapter... That's why she would have given Carla the 3 million. During the chapter itself you think that Lexi was just planning to do it to be nice but you only find out at the end that she always planned to dole out people's shares as she saw fair.

Kitty CK I liked the surprise ending. Lexi didn’t think the others deserved to win, because of their previous behavior and because none of them planned to help others with the money.

Lesley Ellis Excellent explanation Marina. Spot on.

Joy Reddy I think your analysis was perfect Marina. Very well put indeed. I also agree with you. Lexi’s flaw was she was judgemental and handed out her own sentences based on her judgements. I thought the book was fantastic.
