Cheri Allan writes kissing books about love and other shenanigans from her charming fixer-upper in rural New Hampshire. She is often distracted by social media, reality television, and a menagerie of cats and dogs. If you find her whizzing down the slopes at the nearby mountain with her family or inadvertently killing perennials in her garden, bring her coffee. She will gratefully provide the conversation and chocolate.

Books in her ‘Betting on Romance’ series have been nominated for both the Carolyn Readers Choice Award and the Golden Quill. Cheri Allan romance: because life is short, love is funny, and laughter is everything

Dig deep, be clear and honest with yourself and then post this personal motivation in a prominent place so you see it every day. When the setbacks and frustrations and writers block set in (and they will), knowing *why* you write will bring you clarity and purpose. Also, writing can be a lonely business, so find and *join* (yes, even you introverts out there!) a writers or critique group. Nothing motivates me more than talking about writing (and, of course, sexy heroes, I'm not made of stone you know) with fellow writers. They "get it" in ways our friends and family may not. Finally, write. Every day you can manage. And give yourself permission to write sheer and utter crap. That's what revisions are for!(less)

Empty Nesting

When our eldest left for college, I prepared myself for the waves of grief everyone so caringly warned about in the hushed tones usually reserved for discussing terminal illness and death. I packed tissues and braced myself for move-in day. I had best friends on stand-by for those first empty nesting weeks. I waited for the sobbing to begin. I’m a weeper. Surely the tears were only a matter of tim

“Sandy! Ohmigod! No! No!” Not knowing what else to do, Kate grabbed the dog and shoved her into her crate, a fine trail of gray particles spattering the carpet in her wake. Tiny little doggie prints ran into the kitchen and back to the living room. And Randy’s FedEx box lay sprawled and emptied across the living room floor. Kate stared at the carnage in horror, her breath coming in shallow little hiccups. Dear God. Dear God in heaven.”
Cheri Allan, Luck of the Draw

“You know those days when life just walks up and blind-sides you? Takes the wind out of your sails? Strands you up the creek without a paddle, life vest or flare, to gnaw on your own shoe for sustenance? I wish it were one of those days.”
Cheri Allan, Luck of the Draw

“I know the sound of a heart breaking. Silence.”
Cheri Allan, Luck of the Draw

“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Dr. Seuss

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”
Bernard M. Baruch

“THE INVITATION
by Oriah Mountain Dreamer

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you
dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love,
for your dreams,
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow,
if you have been opened by life's betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed from fear of future pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain,
mine or your own,
without moving to hide it,
or fade it,
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy,
mine or your own,
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us to be careful,
to be realistic,
to remember
the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling
me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself;
if you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul;
if you can be faithless and therefore
trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty even when it's not pretty,
every day,
and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure,
yours or mine,
and still stand on the
edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon, "yes!"

It doesn't interest me who you know, or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you,
from the inside,
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with your and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.”
Oriah Mountain Dreamer

“Damn her tongue. She really shouldn't be allowed out without a mouth chaperone.”
Nana Malone, Hit & Miss Groom
