“She finally took a breath. “I’m ready. I love you, Jason.” My life stopped and started again at that moment. My slow smile spread across my face, and I exhaled quickly. “You’re ready?” “Yes.” “You want to? Marry me?” “Yes,” she sobbed, dropping the fishing line and throwing her arms around me. Dirty hands or not, I gathered her into my arms, and she clung to me with all of her strength. God, I was suddenly exhilarated, like I’d just found my entire purpose in life and was standing on the edge of forever. Adrenaline charged through me, and I tilted my neck back, looking up at the sky. “I’m marrying Sandy!” I shouted into the air, to no one in particular. She exhaled with a tearful laugh, clinging to me. Joplin barked at us, and I grinned. “I’m marrying you,” I repeated, softer now, catching her lips in a kiss that gave my heart a reason to beat.”

“Finally, I whispered my words against her forehead. “I want to come home to you for the rest of my life. I want to know that when I’m going home, I’m going home to you. I want to have babies with you,” I said bravely, my throat burning as I spoke. “Curly-haired babies with your big, brown eyes.”

“Jason,” she whispered, breathless, and I lowered to my chair again. Tugging at my zipper, I let my erection spring free, closing it inside my fist. “What are you doing?” I demanded. “I’m lying on your bed. I just wanted to be where you were. And then I… I was thinking of you, and I’m so wet…,” “Facetime. Now.” I waited while the swirling screen connected. When it finally focused, I could make out my shadowy bedroom, and the view jostled as she propped the phone against a pillow.”

“What we did,” she urged, “was for you and Carissa. She sent you that box of… fun… and you two are chatting. Don’t let me get in the way. That’s not what I want.” I stared at her. I wanted to ask her what in the hell she wanted, but I already knew. She became uncomfortable as soon as I became available. I knew her better than I knew myself. As long as Carissa was between us, what we had became a safe zone. A refuge.”

“She’d told me the night before that she would go, and I was going to hold her to it. She needed time, and I was going to make sure that she had it… with me watching over her.”

“Why? Why had almost sixteen years passed since that summer, and only now we were seeing each other in this way?”
