It was really hard on all of us and that experience inspired the character Kit Barrows, who is struggling with grief of her own after the loss of her wife to cancer. I didn't quite know what to do with her, though, until I was trying to write a short story for a writing contest during quarantine in 2020 with specific narrative requirements. She fit with the story perfectly!

I missed the contest deadline (oops) and the short story eventually became a novella... and boom! Elaine's Gift.(less)

When Kiki loses her powers, Ursula suggests that she simply take a break, put it out of her mind for a while and focus on other things.

"Stop trying. Take long walks. Look at scenery. Doze off at noon. Don't even think about flying. And then, pretty soon, you'll be flying again. We each need to find our own inspiration, Kiki. Sometimes it's not easy."
