I mean, Jesus... Talk about an unexpected impact. I don't recall the AI's in the first book as being considered self-aware, but... it made me sad.

The thing that I like about McDevitt is his combination of hard science and very believable characters.
This series heavily involves mysteries, including both archaeological (for dead civilizations on other worlds) and immediate (stuck on strange planets, facing unknown dangers, without sufficient weapons or backup. So if you like a story where you are on an alien world and know nothing about it, but must learn as the characters do, then you'll enjoy these books.
Also, if you enjoy that type of book, you will want to check out Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama and Greg Bear's Hull Zero Three. Both outstanding.
I easily and happily recommend McDevitt, to science fiction fans.
