I'm over authors killing characters for shock value. Where a death advances the story I'm fine with it, but I ultimately read to enjoy a book and won't be made needlessly miserable. If this means reading spoiler reviews before picking up a book, so be it. Don't let anyone tell you what you should put up with, you get to read what you choose.
