Just tried to make a Stendhal joke at work. Oh boy did that fall flat.

A woman was saying that one of the advantages of wearing contact lenses is that you could change the color of your eyes, and she said "for instance if I wanted to I could come to work with one eye red and the other eye black" and I said "oh you want those Stendhal eyes" which I admit is probably more clever than funny, you know, but for coming up with right off the top of my head in the morning isn't too bad - but yeah crickets and wind... crickets and wind... Come to find out, not a single one of my coworkers had heard of either Stendhal or, more shockingly, Flaubert. Not a one.

Joshua A valiant effort - the more I think about the phrase "those Stendahl eyes" the more it grows on me.

There's something to it, I think - a country song in a more sophisticated world?

Geoff But you know what they say - if you have to explain why your joke is funny, it wasn't funny. Sigh

Ashley In a perfect world the embarrassment would be theirs, not yours.

Yeah, you know Stendahl wrote Charterhouse of Parma in like 52 days too, not too bad either!

Jeff Bursey That's a good joke, Geoff. "Tough crowd, tough crowd," as some stand-up comedian used to say.

What's that Mitch Hedberg joke - "I like to close my eyes on stage because I've drawn a picture of an audience enjoying the show more on the back of my eyelids."

Geoff Or maybe a better one from Mitch - "you can't please all the people all the time... and last night, all those people were at my show."
