My goodness can MT write!

My favorite moment so far is when the subversive artist commisioned to paint Lee at his "height of glory" depicts him 2 days after he surrendered at Appomatix with a slave walking to freedom in the background. BIG SMILE.

This is very boring. Part 1 described how he grew up (with career civil servant parents, joined the military but broke both his legs and left). Part 2 started strong describing the scam of private contractors in government, then devolved into his visions of dystopia. I've just started Part 3, and it looks like it's going to get into the leak and his partnership with Russia.

I’m just getting started listening to Meryl Streep read this masterpiece. Oh, it’s so, so good, right from the start. ❤️

This is SO BORING! Nothing happens. I have to make shit up to keep my attention, like why does the young woman marry the old preacher? Because he rapes and impregnates her! There’s literally no other reason based on anything in this book because the dude is poor and boring and she’s not a homeless addict. OMG, how does anyone like this book? Keep My Antonia out of your moth, because that book is beautiful!

Honestly, this is exactly what I imagine India to be like. I’m rooting for the underclass. Murder may well be the only way up. Don’t like that? Fix the corruption. Not all protests are going to be peaceful.

Are Towles’s readers predominantly men or women? This book has been incredibly menacing for me, a woman, but the men have been remarkably decent, at least so far. I’m curious what men feel as they read this.

I think I may have read the best first date scene ever. I’m shocked at how good it was! Delightful!

While I appreciate Pinker's attempt at relentless positivity, he does gloss over important things. What do we do with all the radioactive waste we'll produce to give clean energy to the world? Why use absolute numbers to try to make the (very tone-deaf) case that police shoot as many white people as black people? The latter has me very concern about what other stats he plays fast and loose with.

I'm semi-obsessed with where this book is going! Given my dry streak for written books, I wish I had opted for print over audio.

This book, ya'll! It's GOOD.
