It's interesting to have an unambitious, perhaps even kinda dumb, protagonist.

OMG, so nice to read something with more literary language!

Books like this often come together in the last 15% or so, but I'm a little disappointed so far. Perhaps I am a coward who has not opened himself to transformational experience, but I'm not finding this exploration of the sex\death nexus particularly compelling. Serial killers as pornographers is interestig, though... It still might come together.

Whether or not to inform someone they might experience ego death and meld minds is an ethical issue, not a social one. It's not being thoughtlessly rude, it's ignoring someone's personhood to instrumentalize them. Another issue I suspect will not be adequately explored.

100,000 past lives would, figuring an average 20 years per life, stretch back to the beginning of homo habilis, an issue I doubt this book is going to engage with. Even a thousand lives would be pre-settlement humans, thousands of years from the neolithic revolution. Do a little napkin math, people.

I guess I'm just gonna have to decide to find it amusing the main character is named Ashen Woods. Sigh

It's usually kind of cute when professor characters go into teaching mode, but not when the setup is so blatant. Might not make it through this one...

This book is trying to turn Chicago into a city somehow especially deadly to children, but it's a large city. Every large city has seen more death than you can imagine. You gotta localize a little more.

There's a real lack of immediately for this deep into the book. I'm determined to finish, but I fear it's not going to improve.
