Jeff is starting Table for Two
Really enjoyed the short stories. Lots of O. Henry twists and turns Towles certainly knows his way around fancy NYC. I’m now reading the concluding novella.

A really wonderful read so far. I am about the same age as Yale. I lived in NYC in 1985. I graduated from college in 1981, the summer AIDS first started to be in the news. It’s made me incredibly anxious to read it - not sure why. Also makes me glad to be alive.

When I got on the metro a few minutes ago, the first person I saw is someone I assume is an attractive person somewhere on the MTF spectrum. As my dad said to me decades ago (about himself), I have a lot to learn. I got an email from someone recently. The footer to the email was the person’s preferred pronouns - she, her, hers.

So interesting! So far, a memoir about the author coming to terms with her father’s gender reassignment surgery. A lot of head spinning sentences like “My father was standing with her back to the door.”

A lovely harrowing read. Beautifully written. A little bit of magical realism and a lot of great writing about what it would be like to live in Beirut or another middle eastern city as it descends into chaos and civil war.

Interesting exhausting and intense. With lots of alcoholics in my life and having lost loved ones to the disease, I am always curious about the drinker’s perspective.

Halfway through and having a tough time. The parts set in the orphanage are really hard to get through. The detailed description of the abuse is almost pornographic. And the ‘current day’ scenes with Avery and her love interest - well you see where it’s heading from about a mile away. I’d had this on my Want To Read list, and got it as a gift for my birthday so that seemed serendipitous.

Just getting started. Here is a fun quote: "10 days later, the bill was ratified by the House of Lords. Afterwards Lord Arran was asked why his homosexual law reforms had succeeded, while his efforts to protect the rights of badgers had not. Arran paused, and then said ruminatively, "There are not many badgers in the House of Lords."

A wonderful surprise. Reads like historical fiction (maybe my favorite genre) and highlights an era of American history that I'm not familiar with. It's also one of those political histories, like Lincoln, that reminds me politics has ALWAYS been an ugly business. I had no idea James Garfield was such a heroic figure.
