Wow. This is going to be a good book.

Ultimately pretty disappointing.

It's essentially an attempt to trace American Intellectual history to its current state. Unfortunately it devolves into a sort of angry diatribe against modern life. Jacoby is not wrong, but her perspective seems limited. Certainly, it's scary at times, but in example after example Jacoby passage judgement on some point of modern America and isn't interested in possible goodne

I was really excited about this book from the Introduction but then it was all "YOU DAMN KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN" in the first third of the first chapter. So we'll see.
