Ultimately pretty disappointing.
It's essentially an attempt to trace American Intellectual history to its current state. Unfortunately it devolves into a sort of angry diatribe against modern life. Jacoby is not wrong, but her perspective seems limited. Certainly, it's scary at times, but in example after example Jacoby passage judgement on some point of modern America and isn't interested in possible goodne
