Chinese unity vs. Eurasian disunity in developmental advances

Idea of societal advancement proceeding along east-west axis of Eurasia. Notion of all or most diseases stemming from animal husbandry.

This book seems to be King's answer to the question of where he gets his ideas.

While reading this I had to keep reminding myself that one reason I read fiction is to gain understanding based on another's perspective. I wish that understanding was come by more enjoyably, but that doesn't make it any less valuable.

I know it's wrong for me to rejoice in J.P. Morgan's death but I can't help it. The end is in sight.

This is rugged.

Chapter 4's discussion of cavalry action would have benefited greatly from some diagrams outlining troop movements.

It's also hard to gage what's true and what's invented.

I'm usually disinclined to read historical fiction since it's so hard to write in a way that doesn't betray contemporary mores and sensibilities. This suffers from that same affliction.

If I had known there were romantic elements to this book, I'm not sure I would have been interested in it.
