Ch. 14 is almost shockingly good

I like this so much I’m afraid of what’s left

I have laughed out loud more in the first 80 pages than in the past 800 of all the other boojs I’ve read

The voice here is sneaky-shrewd

almost physically uncomfortable, anxiety rising in my throat

the extended Buc-ee’s sojourn is a bit much

The incessant speculation of “But who did he f*ck?” has been overtaken by the sniffing insistence of “Correct-thinking persons agree…”

the author’s fixation on Gorey’s sexuality does not tell the story he thinks it does.

The subject’s assertion that “You don’t choose the people you fall in love with” puts Gorey very much in average range, in fast company of the culture Gorey himself helped create. That fatalistic regard for romance is entirely normal.

Before he’s dispensed with the artist’s childhood it is already quite clear that the biographer is much more preoccupied with his subject’s sex life than the subject himself was

“the surface of the past closes over and never lets you visit the same place”

“slim as a prayer book” nope, this character doesn’t know from prayer books

so indifferently written

I absolutely believe Mr. Dunne when he says he “passes no judgment” on the mores of his or the later generation, as there is scant if any evidence in these pages that he has any moral compass beyond the whims of the day
