At first I was overwhelmed by the descriptions and found myself unconciously skipping over large chunks of non-dialogue. I was angry that Rice would impose that much detail and wanted the freedom to picture things the way I wanted to picture them. I have since come to the conclusion that if this were the case, my mental images would be incomplete and quite probably incorrect for the period and locations.
