I haven’t given up, just took a lil break!

Currently, appreciating the way Tolstoy is writing the inner world of nine-year-old Seryozha. “He was a child ; but he knew his own soul, it was precious to him, he guarded it as the eyelid guards the eye.”

Some sections of this book can feel long-winded, especially given how looong the book is. But I always feel rewarded for reading them—by the slowly-built perspective and observant storytelling, or by strings of words like: “he looked as fresh as a big glossy green Dutch cucumber.”

This story is so full of beautiful detailed observations of what makes up the human spirit. Currently reading the multiple-chapter-long description of Levin entering the flow state by mowing hay with a scythe ✨ Can relate

This is the longest book I’ve picked up in a long time, but I’m already engrossed in the characters and looking forward to reading the next 7hundredsomething densely typed pages!
