I just decided the history of this time is so deplorable, that while this is historical fiction, I did not want to read about the most evil Lenin and the wretched legacy he left. I hope Anastasia really did survive, but who really knows, as the Russian Federation is the one who is confirming the DNA and the story, and we all know how unreliable the Russian government is.

This has always been Harry's story. I think Harry's death has been foreshadowed by William Warrick's, and that Harry will die of prostate cancer. The allusion to DNA will finally prove Arthur was Harry's father. Giles and Karen will adopt Freddie and he will inherit. Not sure about Lady Virginia, but it will be nice to see Adrian and Bob and Lady Virginia get their comeuppance!

I found this Maisie Dobbs story to be bittersweet. There are many relationships whose outcome will be/have been beset by war, and the turmoil it creates. I think this is the last of the Maisie Dobbs stories, and there are many subtle indicators that Winspear just can't take her characters into the WW2 era. Frank Dobbs' story has a pleasant outcome, but everyone else's story is left in the balance.
