Max McDevitt is on page 147 of 336 of Potato: A History of the Propitious Esculent
For such a short book, the amount of space dedicated to rabbit-trails on non-potato matters is excessive.

The book is enjoyably written, but a few caveats:
1. Arguments about economic issues in the book are garbage.
2. The discussion of enclosure and farm "rationalization" repeats a long discredited argument on productivity and farm size.

Max McDevitt is on page 90 of 268 of The Great Irish Famine: Impact, Ideology and Rebellion (British History in Perspective, 38)
Thoroughly researched. Highly critical, rightfully so, of the Whig administration under Russell. However, the critique is caged in the presentation of facts. Also, the traditionalist tropes regarding the English are eschewed.

chapter 3 provides evidence on private charities that is telling.

The myth that Ulster escaped the famine is demolished with evidence on Belfast, Lurgan, and especially Donegal.
