"The physical configuration of that moment is burned in my memory" -- oh my, the story that kicks off chapter 5 gave me chills. Incredible.

"All theology is contextual, because it emerges from the lived realities of those who are writing, reflecting, and creating language for understanding who God is" (27).

"Black women are made in the likeness of God-in the imago dei. This is not a radical concept. So why would we not draw from the source material of their lives for theological reflection? Why does the field of theology continue to elevate the lives and teachings of white men as somehow the 'standard' approach for understanding doctrine or theology, accusing Black women of merely writing from their particular contexts?

Puryear was a Baptist, and he regularly appeals to "God" in his white-supremacy:

"This line of demarcation between the races is not accidental or the result of outward surroundings; it has been fixed by the finger of God" (8).

"the negro, not by accident but by the act of God, is made inferior to the
Caucasian" (9).

"the laws of God's moral government determine the stratification of human society" (11).

Vile white supremacy.

Robert Lewis Dabney said this: "I have read the essays of "Civis" with profound interest, and with general approbation... You may conceive the satisfaction with which I saw "Civis" take up the cause of truth in the columns of the Planter and Farmer, and my admiration for his moral courage, eloquence and invincible logic. With such champions, the cause of truth is not so hopeless as I feared."

This is such a fascinating, illuminating, clarifying book.
