The journey begins... interesting so far!

just read ch. 4 'What are things made of?' - bit of chemistry to accompany breakfast ;-)

Units 10-16 finished: Synonyms and confusable words (close/shut, start/begin, big/large, end/finish, charge/load, injure/damage, grow/raise, words for old, gain/win/earn/make/achieve, take/wear/carry --> no problem!; metaphors (connected to light and dark, water, fire and heat)weather, travel, countryside and towns & cities (driving/biting rain, secluded beach, shanty town, conservation area, deprived area etc.)

Just read chapter 3 on 'Why are there so many different kinds of animals?' Dawkins comes up with a good analogy by comparing the evolution of all species to the evolution of languages.

Unit 9 of 60 finished, this second part dealt with intensifying adverbs like highly, utterly or ridiculously and the collocations of everyday verbs like make, do, go, become, fall, have, take or pay. I think it was really useful to review this as I discovered I seem to overuse get in places where get or become are more appropriate or necessary. I love finding out things like that, now I'll pay more attention to that!

Part 1 finally finished, wohoo! Up next: Grammatical aspects of collocations with intensifying adverbs and many everyday verbs.

Time to increase my vocab a bit more! First part 'Learning about collocations' is a bit boring for me, but I want do work on this cover to cover.

I love this description: It was a bright cold morning and the forest had never looked that beautiful. Scarlet rowan trees and golden birch blazed like flame against the dark green spruce.
