After eight months of reading Foote, from Fort Sumter to Appomattox, I can finally say the literally magnum opus is done for the year.
I’ll keep my thoughts brief: Foote truly was one of the last great 19th century writers. Without a citation or footnote, his three part narrative continues in popularity. I attribute that to its length of 3k pages / 2.5 million words which attracts people who like to read tomes.
