This book was...weird. I liked parts but it was like modern art: look at it too long and it makes no sense, you have to limit your exposure and not read too much into it or you can make it anything you want. It was depressing but interesting. I did not find the ending satisfactory at all.

Fascinating story, well-written and gripping. However, I personally would have preferred a less fantastically fictional account. The true story was interesting enough without some of the tangents of fancy the author took. Ended a little too abruptly for me, without a completely satisfying explanation, but still a good book.

This book was so well written and researched! I was immediately gripped by the story, even though I knew how it ended. It may be hard to believe that historical non-fiction can be a page turner but this was. Douglas Mawson and his team deserve more than the footnote they receive in most texts and this book delivers. Their strength and determination is inspiring, the story is harrowing and the author handles it well.
