I think I may have to abandon this book. Its just to bleak for me. I'm not in the right mental head space to confront this book, in the way its written right now. Agonisingly, just painfully sad. Superb writing, but too heavy for me. I'm scared of this book. I'm scared of its power. Being so confronted with the utter blank nihillism of suicide is just a nope for me right now thanks.

Everything one needs to know about why postmodernism was a cultural and intellectual blight can be found in this book; a tedious fetish of increasingly bewildering, obscurantian, pickled historical factoids over substance or plot, and most importantly, a constant, endless, repeated hatred and sneering of Marxism, of politics, and of the process of revolutionb as opposed to crusty academic semioitic word games. Eugh.

Are there any limits to Varoufakis' narcassim? Having used the tragedy of suicidal Greeks as a spring board to launch his celebrity career, he now dares subject us to this - half baked utopian twaddle, complete with the usual pathetic post 68er cowardly defeatism, abandoning class struggle, regurgitating capitalist clichés about the USSR and lapsing into the 'postcapitalist' fad as a symptom of intellectual decline

Having subjected us to a character that is little more than a hateful, bullying bitch (and pretending that we should be so enamoured by her straight talking nature, when it actually just comes across as spiteful), he now actually has the fucking balls to dare lecture us in support of a pathetically naive and infantile anarchist fantasy, with the ususal questions of power just brushed over. Fuck me.

The writing in this is just exquisite. Honestly some of the best, most beautiful I've ever read. And the longing, my god, the aching, melancholy, longing for life- it could kill you it's so powerful. So well crafted, so nuanced and subtle, so multi layered. And, bizzarely enough, compared to most dystopias, kinda hopeful. In light of the Roe v Wade decision there are lines in here which are chilling.

How can I book this short be so boring? Glacial plotting, uninteresting characters, and a premise completely wasted. The alt history angle contributes nothing, and in fact, the premise itself is so moronically stupid, with so many butterfly effects that it can't possibly account for, it threatens to break the whole book. Ugh.
