The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914
"Though he was ambassador in London from 1898 until 1920, Cambon spoke not a word of English...he insisted that every utterance be translated into French...He firmly believed...that French was the only language capable of articulating rational thought and he objected to the foundation of French schools in Britain on the eccentric grounds that French people raised in Britain tended to end up mentally retarded."

The Human Predicament: A Candid Guide to Life's Biggest Questions
"A terrorist has an Epicurean tied down. He forces a gun into the Epicurean’s mouth and keeps threatening to pull the trigger. If the threat is acted upon, it will kill the Epicurean instantly. Either (a) the Epicurean remains true to his belief that “death is nothing to us” and sits there unperturbed, or (b) he is unable to conform his emotions to his beliefs and is filled with anxiety..."

Selected Letters
"Make sure that reading many authors and every kind of book-roll does not represent a kind of unsettled drifting...linger over and feed yourself upon a chosen few intellects if you want to take in anything that will stay faithfully in your mind. The man who is everywhere is nowhere...hence a great number of books slackens the mind."
Goodreaders need to hear this.

I might try to pick this one off a chapter or two at a time while reading other books.

"In one word, Queequeg, said I, rather digressively; hell is an idea first born on an undigested apple-dumpling; and since then perpetuated through the hereditary dyspepsias nurtured by Ramadans."
For all I've heard about this book, I wasn't expecting it to be this funny.

The Second Sex
She basically just bodyslammed the whole institution of marriage. Since love and passion have to be free and spontaneous, the social regulation of sexual relations through marriage is often crippling to the happiness of women as well as men. The marriage chapter is full of depressing anecdotes about how bleak, unhappy, and adversarial marriage and domesticity can be; especially when the couple is unequally yoked.

"It is a painful condition to know one is passive and dependent at the age of hope and ambition, at the age where the will to live and to take a place in the world intensifies; woman learns at this conquering age that no conquest is allowed her, that she must disavow herself...all her vital or spiritual impulses are immediately barred."

Having gone through biology, history, and culture, we are now examining the life of a woman in light of her "otherness". Beauvoir's psychological approach is mostly Freudian, which is curious given her objections to Freud's phallocentrism. Nonetheless, some interesting anecdotes about girlhood, how a girl feels trapped in domesticity almost from infancy, and how she feels physically "lacking" compared to boys.

Wading through the mythology section. Some basic themes include the notion that for Man, Woman is nature itself raised to consciousness; she is the means by which Man interfaces with nature. There's also a tension between the two archetypes of wife and mother. The wife is an Other to be possessed and dissolved into the possessor, while the mother is a reminder of man's entrapment in the cycle of life and death.
