Completely fuckin blown away already. Preface alone is incredibly powerful. Fella mentions MF DOOM as his favorite rapper in the first chapter. Terrifyingly and necessarily blunt.

Mrs Yeobright's long walk might be one of my favorite sequences in all of literature.

Devolving very quickly into nonsense. Too many names meant to make me chuckle and far too many asides

Astonishing control of narrative and space; Egdon Heath is my favorite Wessex setting. Had to skip The Hand of Ethelberta, his only comedy, the final Hardy i have yet to find in a bookstore. Someone help me out

Such a breath of fresh air to read Hoeg writing from a first person perspective again. Like Borderliners, the narrator and protagonists are children, whose perspectives lend themselves best to Hoeg's outlook.

This is pretty much on track with how muddled in theme and scope his first two novels are, but buoyed somewhat stylistically speaking by its postmodern spontaneity.

Amid a plethora of deplorable male leads, Seargeant Troy has to be Hardy's most manipulative.

Hardy begins to give less and less fucks, gonna drop you right into shit and let you figure it out. Literary allusions begin to take form in action and not just dialogue.

All of the elements that would produce his truly classic work are here, sans the epic scope. In these more insular early works, restrictive timeframes result in menial redundancies. You'd think it'd be the opposite, but without it Hardy doesn't get the opportunity to portray the tragic shift from country-bumpkin naivete to relative despondent that seems to be his bread and butter.

Sparser and with a far more involved narrator, Hoeg's dry tone finds a fitting home in the restrained setting of rigorous boarding schools. Thus far...

This is where it all starts to come together for Hardy, where he finds his voice and lane. Heavier emphasis on dialogue and a much less telegraphed juxtaposition of class. He's a writer that astonishes by making the simple seem so profound.

Kicks off with a much more honed-in perspective than Hoeg's debut, and accomplishes the entirety of the cultural context achieved throughout Danish dreams via tangentially-expository plot details naturally ensuing from the investigation. Begins to wander off into Mystic River/Snow Falling on Cedars popular arthouse crime toward the end of the first book.

Huge drop off; where is the magical realism? I can understand the blunter, less fantastical perception of reality as folks age, but along with the author's further invasive commentary on the narrative and struggle to drill into the reader's head his tales parallels to Danish histor, shit be lackin.

'A piano isn't much of an instrument.'

'It is the fashion to say so now. I think it is quite good enough. The men who despise pianos do it as a rule from their teeth, merely for fashion's sake, because cleverer men have said it before them - not from the experience of their ears.'

Cytherea too woke for the critical establishment
