It has live its whole life like that? - Description of the goldfinch contrasting his mothers awe of the painting with the fact that it's a bird perpetually chained to a stand. Theme for the novel? We'll see

Man I hope this comes together... Because I love everything else Pearl has written. some of my favorites!!! He captures periods so well. His mysteries are interesting. His characters are fascinating. His historical imagination is awesome. And so far, this absolutely sucks. The characters are ridiculous. I could not give the first damn about them. Also, audio recording is the worst audio actor I've ever heard.

"Either we lived by accident and died by accident , or we live by plan and die by plan. " And thus begins Brother Juniper's investigation about the random or planned nature of our lives as studied in the tragedy of the collapse of San Luis Bridge.

Actually this is the book on CD so I'm not sure of the exact page but I'm on chapter 4. Although I have loved everything else I've read by Geraldine Brooks I was hesitant to start this novel based on the description . So it has been a wonderful's surprise and somewhat of a smack in the head to start reading it again and to be reminded of Ms. Brooks' tremendous narrative talent.

Just got the book in the mail as part of a sweepstakes from good reads!!! Yeah!!!! I wish my schedule would allow me to read more and faster because I am HOOKED! I've loved Archer's storytelling in each of his novels I've read. And this one is exciting since there's a whole series of novels to follow! It's like the beginning of a great journey that I know will have spectacular scenery along the way!!! More to follow

Love, love, love Kostova. The detail with which she writes is stunning. In the Historian, Eastern Europe was the star more than any character. Her writing so far is brilliant. I'm wondering If there is a theme of the "masculine lens" going on. I'm a little disturbed that what was going on in the painting is going to be the theme of the whole novel, and that's not a theme I deal with well or enjoy. We'll see.

Enjoying the voices of each character and liking the way she is very slowly consistently hinting at horrible things underlying a seemingly horrible situation... Or maybe all a ruse... Excited to keep going.

I am loving this book as much as you ever can when such difficult subject matter is addressed. I didn't think I'd care for it after People of the Book which I REALLY loved and was such a different set up. But the common thing between the two is that Brooks is a master story teller who creates really spectacular voices for her characters. Can't wait to finish.
