So far in this book, the main character, Will, has come of age to pick which career he will carry out for his whole life. Will wanted to go to battle school, but was declined. No school accepted him, so he thought he was doomed to life on the farms. However, the chief saw characteristics of a ranger in Will. The chief spoke with a local ranger, and Will is now training to be a ranger.

So far in the book, the brotherband followed the pirate Zarac by the help of Zarac’s first mate who they had taken captive. The set to shore for a couple of days to let Ingvar recover, and the prisoner escaped. Two members of the crew went into the forest to find him, and succeeded. They recaptured him, and are now back on Zarac’s trail.
